IB Accreditation Process Continues

Mr. McCathie updates us on our International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation as a full Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade IB World School, as we move into the final year.

Dear Lausanne Community,

As we move into the final year of our International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation as a full Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade IB World School, excitement among our staff is building.

Lausanne's successful Upper School IB Programme, implemented in 2009, has been supported by a Lausanne-developed Pre-IB curriculum in Lower School and Middle School. Because of this, alignment with the official IB Programmes will only have minor changes in most areas of your family's experience.

Colleges already identify students who have gone through IB programs as better prepared for their college experiences. As the Director of Admissions for Harvard University shared, "Success in an IB Programme correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript."

But even more importantly, the full adoption of the IB curriculum will help better prepare our students for life in a global environment. Students who complete the IB Programme at Lausanne will be well-rounded individuals, ready for college and ready to make an impact on the world stage. To put it simply: it teaches students how to learn.

To become accredited by the IB, the organization calls us to focus on the Approaches to Learning: deliberate strategies, skills and attitudes that move away from the regurgitation of facts to prepare them for everyday life. The approach helps develop students into confident lifelong learners, able to address difficult issues that may arise throughout their lives. It asks them to dig deeply into not only how the world works, but also who they are.

The IB uses evidence-based learning. In our Lower School, where the IB accredited Primary Years Programme will be in place, the grading system will remain similar, but you'll see more use of IB language. In our Middle School, changes in student evaluation will help us see growth in specific IB skills over time.

The IB's Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes are based on the very latest educational research, and having the Lower School and Middle School officially accredited by the IB structure ensures that Lausanne will always offer the best practices of teaching methods. And to ensure that our faculty remain at the forefront of educational practices, we're offering them more extensive professional development opportunities.

It also has a deep aspect of character value education tied to all aspects of the curriculum. At the core of the IB program is the learner profile, a set of ten attributes that provides a foundation for all students, PK-12, characteristics in which to strive for to become truly global minded citizens. You'll see signs around campus displaying these ideas, which go hand-in-hand with the seven statements of The Lausanne Way.

As we continue this process, we'll be sharing how becoming fully accredited by the IB will further improve the education provided by Lausanne in subject areas across Lausanne. Because of the already rigorous Pre-IB academic model that we follow at Lausanne, many changes may not be noticeable to our community. We'll do our best to make sure you know about any changes that are happening and keep you up to date throughout the process.
