Literacy, SK - Grade 4

In Senior Kindergarten through fourth grade, literacy skills are taught through the Reading and Writing Workshop model that all of Lausanne's Lower School teachers are trained in at the Columbia University Teachers College. This curriculum model incorporates mini-lessons where skills are explicitly taught through guided reading and writing groups, independent work time and conferring with a teacher and learning specialist. Reading workshop teaches reading and comprehension strategies that differentiate based on a student's strengths and challenges and each classroom has its own unique library system designed to engage at every reading level. The application of skills within the reading workshop is done through exposure to a variety of reading strategies. Writing workshop teaches students specific writing skills that are applied at their own individual levels and incorporate grammar skills. Phonics and spelling skills are taught through the Units of Study in Phonics (SK-2nd) and Words Their Way (3rd and 4th). Both of these programs provide interactive instruction that enables students to apply the phonics skills they have learned in their writing.
