Enrichment Opportunities

In addition to integrating enrichment activities into our everyday curriculum, we offer additional opportunities to challenge students in various areas. The enrichment activities below are currently offered to Middle School Students for the upcoming school year. More detailed information will be added as deadlines, dates, cost, etc is made available. Any questions can be directed to the faculty member/sponsor indicated for each activity.

National History Day

Program description
: Students compete individually or as a team in the category of their choice (website/documentary/performance/paper/exhibit). Students pick a topic to research based on a yearly theme. The theme for 2020 is “Breaking Barriers”.

 

International Academic Competition

Individual competitions include:

Program Description: Students compete individually and/or as a team for one or all events. These are buzzer-beater based competitions that help to prepare for Upper School Knowledge Bowl. These competitions also help build knowledge of each content area and confidence.

 

Middle School Model United Nations

Program Description: Students work in small groups to write a resolution that they present at a local Model United Nations Program for their assigned country. This competition helps students gain knowledge of their assigned country and the United Nations, as well as develop research, critical thinking, debate and communication skills. Model UN helps students prepare for Upper School Model UN Club.

 

Middle School Youth in Government

Program Description: The Tennessee YMCA Youth in Government Program is an annual conference designed to offer high school and middle school students a hands-on experience with state government. Students learn to write a proposed state law and then present to a model TN House of Representatives and Senate to try to have their law passed. This competition helps students gain knowledge of the law making process, as well as develop research, critical thinking, debate and communication skills. Model UN helps students prepare for Upper School Youth in Government.

Program description: The Competition Series has 4 levels of competition—school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Altogether the rounds are designed to take about 3 hours to complete.
