This week, Lausanne's tenth-graders are teaming up with their advisories for the Class of 2025 Internships and Olympics, a service-learning initiative that will help amplify their impact on the Memphis community. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to work with several local nonprofits, including Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Midsouth Food Bank and Bridge Builders, while learning more about the mission of those organizations.
Students kicked off the week in EPAC this morning with a 'Welcome to the Olympics" event, where each advisory took the stage to introduce their team name before heading out to learn about their first service opportunity.
"Encouraging students to serve others is crucial because it allows them to see the bigger picture, how they fit into the world and how they can impact it," shared Rachel Hammons, Director of Lausanne 360. "These experiences also allow students to grow and develop outside the classroom."
In addition to fostering the importance of volunteering, the service-learning week enables students to connect and build relationships with their fellow Lynx and Memphis community members. In previous years, several Lausanne students have continued volunteering at the nonprofit they worked with well after the week concluded.
"At Lausanne, we have this huge ability to make a major difference in the city of Memphis, in the state of Tennessee, across the country, and even a global impact, and that's why we open the door for service learning as often as we can," Hammons said.
The service-learning week is an essential part of the sophomore experience. Students across grade levels participate in service initiatives such as the first-grade restaurant project that supports MIFA (Memphis Inter-Faith Association) to historical and ecological studies, including the global endeavors project in sixth grade and the green project in second grade. Through these experiences, they gain an understanding of how serving impacts communities around them as well as how those actions may have a global outcome.
"Service learning helps our students embrace the unfamiliar and learn to be leaders who are aware of the benefit of community involvement," said Stuart Dunster, Head of Upper School. "When students learn to listen to the needs of a community, they become outstanding citizens who give back and put others before themselves."
