Lausanne Welcomes New Faculty

We would like to welcome the following new faculty to Lausanne!

Lower School

  • Katie Hise  First Grade
    Katie graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching: Elementary Education degree from the University of Memphis. She has nine years of teaching experience in junior kindergarten, second and third grades. Katie previously taught at Lausanne from 2014-2019 and is very excited to return "home!" She has also taught at St. Luke's Day School and PDS. Katie is married to her husband of 9 years, John. They have two little boys, Houston (3) and Webb (1.5), a dog-Venice, and a cat-Vera. Their son, Houston, will start in PK3 at Lausanne this year and they can't wait for Webb to start in 2022. Katie loves to spend time with her boys, travel and work out.
  • Rayann Jaber  PK2
    Rayann has been a part of the Lausanne family since 2016. She was interim Librarian and has worked in Lausanne's afterschool programs, summer camps and admission office. She graduated from the University of Memphis with a concentration in Child Development and Family Studies. Rayann is a proud second-generation Palestinian-American who loves food, music and hanging out with her family and friends. She said she feels her heart has always belonged here at Lausanne and is looking forward to a great year. 
  • Simone Lima  PK2
    Simone has a degree in Occupation Therapy and a Master's degree in Special Education. She had the opportunity to work as an OT in her home country of Brazil for several years before moving to the United States. Simone also had the pleasure and honor to work for SRVS as an Early Interventionist and as a teacher providing services for the unique population in the beautiful city of Memphis that she now calls home. She has two daughters, Sofia (10) and Bianca (8), that have been attending Lausanne since PK. Simone's husband is also a teacher and the soccer coach for Lausanne! She loves pets. They have a dog (Brownie), a cat (Mimi), a bunny (Cleo) and a fish (Poseidon). Traveling and spending time with family and friends are some of her favorite things to do during her spare time.
  • Clerisa Smith  Librarian/ANTS
    This will be Clerisa's ninth year as a librarian. In 2004, she received her master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Memphis. She was a third-grade teacher in two public schools and later became a substitute teacher. In 2011, after an interim position in the library media center at the University of Memphis Campus School, Clerisa fell in love with it and was encouraged to pursue a career as a 21st-century librarian (aka Library Information Specialist). In 2012, she received an endorsement as a school library information specialist and continued working at Campus School. Clerisa loves teaching and making connections with literature! She has been married for 27 years and has two children (a 23-year-old daughter and a 19-year-old son). Both of her children are studying to become aviators. Her family enjoys traveling and visiting National and State Parks. Clerisa loves taking pictures of our everyday and sometimes not-so-ordinary life. She loves cooking and preparing healthy meals with vegetables from my garden. She also loves to practice yoga – Namaste!
  • Jennifer Smith  Third Grade
    Jennifer is a born and raised Memphian who attended The University of Memphis. She has been a Supervising Teacher at the University of Memphis Campus School since 2014 and is now thrilled to be joining the Lausanne family. Her husband, Ryan, and her have two sweet little boys, Huck (2) and Nash (9 months). They can often be found outdoors, enjoying everything from running and biking to paddleboarding and rock climbing. Additionally, they love to travel and are always up for an adventure! This summer, they took a road trip through eight different national parks.

Middle School

  • Kalyn Underwood –5th Grade Science
    Kalyn is thrilled to be joining the Lausanne family as the 5th-grade science teacher! For the past 15 years, she has taught physics, biology, anatomy and physiology and AP Psychology. She has also worked in administration. Kalyn is happy to return to full-time teaching, seeing lightbulbs switch on her students as they learn something new. Her sons, Klyne and Everett, are joining the 6th and 4th grade, and she is married to Adam. Kalyn graduated from the University of Memphis with a B.S. in Biology and from the University of Nebraska-Kearney with an M.S. in Biology. She loves reading, exercising and doing art with her boys when she has free time. 
  • Cassidy Fernandez – 5th Grade English
    Cassidy Fernandez is excited to join the Lausanne Community this year as a 5th-grade teacher and a coach. This is her 8th year teaching and she said she has loved every minute. Cassidy graduated from Western Governors University with an Education Degree concentrated on K-6. She is originally from the west coast, so she loves being outside and being active. Cassidy said she is grateful to be a part of such a welcoming community.
  • Bethany Woods – 6th Grade Math
    This is Bethany's first year at Lausanne. She is super excited to be a part of this family. She graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in Integrated Studies for Middle Grades. Bethany will be teaching 6th-grade Mathematics and going into her seventh year teaching 6th grade Mathematics. She has three boys: Jacob, Collin, and Mason. Bethany enjoys watching her boys play baseball, football and basketball. She also enjoys riding four-wheelers and attending concerts and knows she was meant to be at Lausanne. Bethany can't wait to dive right into this amazing year with amazing students.
  • Stephanie Kohnke –7th Grade Math
    Stephanie Kohnke joined the faculty of Lausanne Collegiate School as a 7th-grade mathematics teacher in 2021. Mrs. Kohnke has worked in education for the sixteen years before joining Lausanne, with most of that time spent as a Middle School mathematics teacher in New Jersey and Illinois. She has a Master of Arts in Teaching, Secondary Education: Mathematics and a degree from The College of New Jersey. Mrs. Kohnke enjoys playing pickleball, watching sports, and traveling with her husband and two adult sons in her spare time. She also has a dog named Marley.
  • Ellie Beard – 5-8th Grade French
    Although this is Ellie's first year at Lausanne, this is her third year teaching. She has a Bachelor's and Master's degree in French. Ellie's studies have allowed her to travel and learn in France and other Francophone countries in Europe. Outside of school, she enjoys running and just being outside in nature. Ellie also bakes for her parents' coffee shop, Square Beans, in Collierville. She is very excited to be where she is and continues to share passion with other passionate learners! 
  • Bing Osterman – 5-8th Grade Dance
    Bing is thrilled to join the Lausanne faculty full time, after enjoying teaching ballet and creative movement for the Lausanne Conservatory since 2019. This year marks her 21st year as a dance educator. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Development from the University of Mississippi and received her pre-professional ballet training in Slidell, Louisianna, and from master teachers worldwide. Photography is also her great love, a passion she pursues both professionally and as a hobby. Outside of school, Bing enjoys time with her family and giant fluffy dog, Arlo. Her children, Rowan and Emmeline, are also so excited to begin their Lausanne journey this year as students in the 5th and 1st grades. They are looking forward to being a part of this amazing community of educators and families! 
  • Magan Laymon – 5-8th Grade Physical Education
    Laymon comes to Lausanne with an impressive history in lacrosse at the college level. An Ilion, New York native, she grew up playing soccer and participating in track and field with her two brothers. A dual-sport athlete in high school, she also became a state qualifier in bowling, a sport she also enjoyed with her brothers. Laymon said she is excited to come to Lausanne and the opportunity that it presents her.
  • David Nelson – Head Of Middle School
    David comes to us from The Webb School of Knoxville, where he has enjoyed a long and successful tenure as Middle School Head. Before that, he had many years of experience in private/independent schools as an administrator, teacher and coach. David is very excited about joining the Lausanne family and thrilled to be working with such a talented faculty.
  • Ariel Spencer – Administrative Assistant to Middle School
    Ariel Spencer is the new Administrative Assistant to Middle School. She is exhilarated to be joining the Lausanne Collegiate School family and the Middle School team. Ariel graduated from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Technical and Professional Writing. She is currently working on her Master of Arts in the Liberal Arts program at the University of Memphis. Ariel is a proud Memphian, born and raised, that loves music, art and BBQ. Some of her hobbies include tennis, volleyball and gaming. Since she stepped foot onto the Lausanne campus, she said she has known that this was her home. She is honored to be here and cannot wait for the party to start!  

Upper School

  • Laurie Gray – College Advising
    Laurie joins us from Collegiate Funding Advisors, where she was Vice President and Director of College Planning. Previous to this, Laurie was a College Advisor at Briarcrest School and has many years of experience helping students find the best university fit upon graduating high school.
  • Todd Cowden – Design
    Todd joins us from the Village Tech Schools in Texas and has a background in game design, design thinking, graphic design, digital film, virtual reality and much more. Todd has also been a presenter for Lausanne Learning for several years.
  • Karla Webb – Mathematics
    Karla joins us from Ridgeway High School, where she taught math starting in 2012. Overall, she has been teaching since 2002. She holds an Ed.D. in instruction and curriculum and is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Memphis, teaching a range of math-based courses.
  • Brooke Yancey – Science
    Brooke joins us from Craigmont Middle School where she was the 8th-grade physical science teacher. She has a degree in biochemistry and a master's in teaching, instruction and curriculum leadership. Brooke will predominantly be teaching biology and chemistry at Lausanne. 
  • Randall Siefker – Social Studies
    Randall has spent the last six years at American International School in Egypt teaching MYP social studies. He brings a wealth of international experience and also holds a master's in international studies. 
  • Walt Keel – Social Studies
    Walt's last teaching experience was at Abraham Lincoln High School in Philadelphia and he has previous experience teaching in Seoul, Korea. Walt holds a master's in secondary education from the University of Pennsylvania. 
  • Carolina Larrumbe – World Languages
    Carolina returns to Lausanne, having spent the last few years living and teaching in Spain. She was a student favorite here at Lausanne and we are delighted to have her back!
  • Laura David – Maternity Cover for Samantha Douglas
    Laura will be with us until Winter Break, covering Samantha Douglas as the Upper School Guidance Counsellor. Laura has a master's in counseling and previously worked as the Upper School Counsellor at St. Benedict School.
