The Lausanne Lynx began their quest for a third straight state title with a 62-29 win over the Goodpasture Christian Cougars Friday night.
The Lynx were led in scoring by Eric Gray '19, who scored four touchdowns on 172 yards rushing.
On his second trip to the end zone, Gray broke the record for most career touchdowns in Tennessee high school football history. The previous record of 132 was set by Troy Fleming of Battle Ground Academy from 1995-1998. Gray ended the game with 134 total career touchdowns.
It wraps up a week of honors for the Lausanne running back. Gray was announced as a semifinalist for the Tennessee Titans Mr Football Award. He is seeking his third straight Mr Football award, something that no other player has done.
The other story of the night was the Lausanne special teams, who also scored four touchdowns.
"I didn't think we played our best football," said head coach Kevin Locastro. "On the defensive side of the ball, we made some mistakes. We had three penalties that set up their first touchdown. But one thing we did is we played out best game on special teams."
Laussanne now heads to the second round of the playoffs, where they will host Evangelical Christian School. The Lynx defeated ECS 42-34 in September in a game also held at Lausanne.
"We are going to have to put all three phases of our game together. ECS is going to be a strong opponent," Locastro said. "We will shore things up over the weekend with team meetings and practices and be ready to go next week."
