Lynx Set To Defend State Title

It was a game worth waiting for, even if it meant waiting a little longer than expected.

There was a delay because of referee issues, which meant the 4 p.m. tip-off happened a little closer to 6 p.m. But once our defending state champion Lynx were able to hit the court, the waiting paid off.

The Goodpasture Cougars, out of Madison, Tenn., jumped out to an early double-digit lead behind the shooting of senior Tripp McEachern, who ended the game with 39 points after shooting 8-11 from 3-point range.

Not to be outdone for Lausanne was freshman Alden Applewhite ‘21, who had 16 of his 26 points in the first half and had an answer for the Cougars 3-point barrage.

Lausanne cut the lead to six by the end of the first quarter, trailing 46-41 at the half.

As the nets cooled off, fans were finally able to take a breath after the half of basketball they had just seen.

The second half began and it was apparent that the locker room speech Lausanne Head Coach Marvis Davis gave had worked.

The five point Goodpasture lead quickly turned into a six point Lausanne lead behind the post play of senior Corteze Love ‘18, whose power moves to the basket had Cougar players fouling in an attempt to stop him. Fortunately for Lausanne, it turned into a lot of points as Love had 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

After making a run to tie the game late, senior Sky Forrest ‘18 put the Lynx in the lead for good and sealed Lausanne's trip back to Nashville as Goodpasture resorted to fouling to extend the game. Forest ended the game with 22 points. Adding to the scoreboard for the Lynx were Bo Montgomery ’20 with 12, Kohen Thompson ‘18 with nine and Jonathan DeJurnett ‘20 with one.

The scoreboard read 86-82 as the horn sounded, and that meant Goodpasture wasn't the only one headed back to the Nashville area.

For the second straight season, the Lynx will end the season this coming weekend at Lipscomb University playing for the state championship.

The semi-finals will be played Thursday against Knoxville Webb. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
