Matthew Russell ’19 has used his time at Lausanne to the fullest, embracing unfamiliar situations and never turning down an opportunity or challenge that interests him.
When Matthew isn’t summiting mountains, backpacking across trails or mountain biking, he spends most of his free time involved in extra-curricular activities at Lausanne. As a Student Government representative, student ambassador, Thespian Society Co-President, Model UN delegate, Spirit Committee Co-President, Co-Spirit Leader, member of the Science Bowl Team and member of the swim team, Matthew has taken advantage of the what the school he loves offers.
“Lausanne is an incredibly special place that celebrates and continuously supports every individual,” Matthew shared. “I have truly enjoyed being a member of a community that encourages open-mindedness and success. I wouldn’t be the same without each and every individual that has contributed in their own special way to the Lausanne community.”
After graduation, Matthew’s top choice for college is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is interested in majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Matthew is also debating double majoring or minoring in Aerospace Engineering, Theatre Arts and International Business.
Although he plans on taking a rigorous route in college, Lausanne’s International Baccalaureate Programme has prepared him for the challenges. Matthew also knows his parents will be there to support his decisions as he pursues his degree.
“My parents have always been there for me and given me a guiding light in the most difficult of situations,” Matthew said. “I would not be who I am today without their help, care and continuous effort to make our family as close as it can be. Their wisdom and encouragement have taught me more than I can even fathom, and I am forever grateful for all of the opportunities they have given me to grow.”
