Middle School Students Expand Their Reading Palates With Book Tasting

Lausanne fifth-graders had the opportunity to expand their reading palates with a book tasting experience held in our campus library.

Featuring a seating arrangement complete with tablecloths, paper plates and a book menu, the event's restaurant-style atmosphere provided the perfect setting for students to sample some compelling reads.

Some of the genres available for evaluation included science fiction, nonfiction, classics, biographies, fantasy and books from a series. To begin, Mrs. Fernandez placed a different book on each plate and gave students a few minutes to read through a section. Once time was up, students rated what they thought about the text using their menus before rotating to another genre.

"The book tasting helped give them exposure to books they may not have selected for themselves from the classroom or school library," said fifth-grade teacher Cassidy Fernandez, who hosted the event for her students. "The purpose is to encourage, excite and motivate students to become active readers."
